As a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, internet connectivity has become more critical than ever. Unfortunately, not everyone can afford high-speed internet, making it difficult for them to stay connected and participate in online activities. To help bridge this digital divide, the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) has launched the Affordable Connectivity Program (ACP).
In this article, we will explain what the Affordable Connectivity Program or ACP is, how it works, and how you can sign up to save up to 75% per month on your internet bill.
The ACP is a $3.2 billion federal program that aims to make high-speed internet more affordable for low-income households. The program was created as part of the Consolidated Appropriations Act of 2021, which was signed into law on December 27, 2020.
Under the ACP, eligible households can receive up to $50 per month in discounts on their internet bills, and up to $75 per month if they live on Tribal lands. Additionally, eligible households can receive a one-time discount of up to $100 on a laptop, desktop computer, or tablet.
To participate in the ACP, you must meet the eligibility requirements. The program is available to households that have a member who meets at least one of the following criteria:
Qualifies for the Lifeline program
Receives benefits under the free and reduced-price school lunch program or the school breakfast program
Received a Federal Pell Grant during the current award year
Experienced a substantial loss of income since February 29, 2020, and the household had a total income in 2020 at or below $99,000 for single filers and $198,000 for joint filers
Meets the eligibility criteria for a participating provider's existing low-income or COVID-19 program
To apply for the ACP, you will need to contact a participating broadband provider in your area. You can find a list of participating providers on the FCC's website. The provider will verify your eligibility and apply the discounts to your account. You can then enjoy high-speed internet at a more affordable price.

The ACP has several benefits, including:
The ACP helps ensure that more households have access to high-speed internet, which can improve connectivity and enable people to participate in online activities such as remote work, distance learning, telehealth, and social connections.
The ACP provides significant discounts on internet bills, making high-speed internet more affordable for low-income households. This can help bridge the digital divide and ensure that more people have access to the resources and opportunities available online.
In addition to discounts on internet bills, eligible households can also receive a one-time discount on a laptop, desktop computer, or tablet. This can help ensure that more people have access to the devices they need to participate in online activities.
The Affordable Connectivity Program is an essential initiative that can help bridge the digital divide and ensure that more people have access to high-speed internet. If you're struggling to afford internet service, the ACP may be able to help. Contact a participating broadband provider in your area to learn more about eligibility requirements and how to apply.
