TV Cable

Companies also had to develop alternative channels for watching content as more consumers abandon conventional cable TV in favor of streaming sites. HBO, which stands for Home Box Office, began broadcasting in November of 1972 and has continued to not only remain profitable but also remain important to modern audiences. One way they're doing this is via HBO Max.

So, what is HBO Max?

For nearly 50 years, HBO has reigned supreme in the world of exclusive subscription content, with seven 24-hour channels dedicated to high-quality original and licensed programming.

HBO Now, launched five years ago, was the company's first foray into the digital era, laying the foundation for HBO Max, a much-expanded operation.

This service blends HBO's outstanding library of original shows with a subscription to Netflix.

Pricing and Competitors

Generally, the cost is a consideration when choosing a streaming service, and HBO faces some competition in this region.

HBO is a monthly subscription service that starts at $14.99 and is characterized by high programming, not only now, but for a long time. HBO's programming, especially their Sunday night shows, has become legendary in tv history.

Euphoria, Barry, and West World are only a few examples of HBO's well-known programming. Game of Thrones, True Blood, Entourage, Girls, Deadwood, True Detective, Big Love, Six Feet Under, The Sopranos, and Sex and the City are only a few of the previous series. Tales from the Crypt first aired on HBO, if you go back far enough.

If you like shows that are more like movies or sagas, that's a tough lineup to beat. Even if you save a few bucks, if you're a die-hard fan of that form of material, some of the rivalries would possibly fall short in terms of production and content value.

You can watch two screens and get regular HD viewing with the standard package. As a result, most Netflix users can pay between $8.99 and $12.99 per month. Netflix launches whole seasons at once, allowing you to binge-watch an entire season rather than waiting for a new episode every week as HBO requires.

Hulu

Hulu begins at $5.99 per month, has a standard version for $11.99 per month, and a premium plus live TV version for $60.99 per month. Hulu can lack the range of other alternatives, but it is great for streaming combined with live television.

Amazon

A standalone subscription to Amazon Prime Video costs $8.99 per month, or you can watch many of their shows as part of your Prime membership. Since many people already have a Prime membership ($12.99 per month or $119 per year), Amazon is also a good add-on subscription service for viewers.

They also have some great signature material, but many will agree that HBO's high-caliber shows still outperform most of Amazon's content, at least for the time being. Amazon, on the other hand, is a large corporation that publishes material all at once, similar to Netflix. Their content will almost certainly continue to improve in quality.

THE HBO SERVICE OPTIONS

There are many choices inside HBO, and the names could be confusing to those who aren't familiar with streaming platforms. When determining if HBO Max is right for you, take into account the various levels of HBO's operation.

HBO Go

HBO Go, which is a streaming service for those who still pay for HBO's original cable version is the oldest of HBO's subsets. If you subscribe to HBO and watch it on TV, you can also watch the shows on your smartphone or tablet while you're not at home. HBO costs anywhere from $5 to $20 a month, varying on your provider and whether you get a discount when you sign up.

So, what is HBO Max if there is a cable version, a cable version with downloading, and an only-streaming version? Time-HBO Warner's Max seems to be an attempt to stay relevant with channels like Disney+ and other rivals by providing more kid-friendly content and sitcoms (Friends may be one of them in the future).

Most people associate older cable networks with negative connotations, one of which was Time-Warner. This platform appears to be a rebranding effort by HBO to launch yet another streaming service that isn't limited to the most extreme, adult-demographic shows for which the network is popular. The cost of HBO Max will be $15 a month when it launches in 2020.

WHEN HBO MAX IS WORTH THE PRICE

If you believe that investing a few extra bucks to watch classic, high-quality shoes is a worthwhile investment, HBO Max might be ideal for you. You'll have to wait for a new episode of current HBO shows every week, but sometimes the wait is part of the fun.

On the plus side, if a colleague binges a new show all at once the first night until you get an opportunity to watch it, you're less likely to hear spoilers. We all had to witness the ending at the same time if you watched Game of Thrones. The jokes about Tiger King (Netflix) can be passed around for weeks before you get around to seeing it.

In the end, the cost difference between platforms is not important. However, there is a trade-off between show quality and binge-ability. That's where you'll have to make the most important decision about your viewing habits.

Conclusion

Is HBO Max, then, worth the money? That, like so many other items, will be determined by the person and what they value. What you want to watch, how you want to watch it, and whether or not you want to get rid of cable will all influence your decision.

Our conclusion is that it is actually not worth it if you want to save every last penny you can, tend to binge shows all at once, and prefer a mix of good works and more "fluff" shows that you can watch and worry about.
